I am him, I am her,
Though you may not quite concur,
Obvious gifts, or hidden ones,
I am just like everyone.
I flap, I clap, I hum, I moan,
Odd little babbles, or speak in monotone,
Awkward and clumsy, with low muscle tone,
Social skills are difficult, I would rather be alone.
Sensory abounding,
Oblivious to surroundings,
Spinning in circles, lining up toys,
Echoing words or making some noise.
Odd obsessions, weird little quirks,
Some are at awe, while others just smirk,
Fussy, picky little eater, finicky dresser,
Despite the difference, I am not any lesser.
Consistent routine, follow I must,
For without the linear path, it's so difficult to adjust,
Feelings I know but cannot seem to regulate,
People blindly judge, seems easier to speculate.
I am tired, I am sad,
I am scared, I am mad.
Constant frustration, you can easily attest,
Firecrackers of emotions simply can't be suppressed.
Try speaking up with little or no intelligible voice,
You will understand when you're compelled without a choice.
Triggered and angered, bottled up, I implode,
I run and escape, I hit as I explode.
It takes a while to earn my trust,
But when I do, I do adjust.
Shy little me, comes out of my shell,
Because you are sincere, I know, I can tell.
Some of your words, I just cannot seem to construe,
But your never-ending patience, I sense all the way through.
Learning is tough, it is hard to digest,
Your love and compassion, oh how I love to ingest.
Our world is the same, and yet it is not,
But this war that I fight it is not for naught.
For I teach compassion, kindness, and patience,
In a world of differences, we must show our presence.
My challenging ways, you tackle the hurdles,
Harsh, sleepless nights, we go around in circles.
I appreciate the ways you help me navigate this world,
Despite the constant chaos that autism has hurled.
