The Stories We Tell

Painted Stories, by Lou Principe, Acrylic, 9 X 12

Strangers, acquaintances, friends, family, akin,

As I look around, and I look within,

Realize, that we do have something in common,

We have something shared, something solemn.

Memories of the past, in our hearts and minds they dwell,

Raw emotions buoys up, for each stories we tell,

No matter how long and insistent, we bury our past,

It shall rise up in the surface, no matter how it was cast.

Birthdays, weddings, and friendly reunions,

Lifetime achievements, graduations and promotions,

Think of the life and the laughter we once shared,

New experiences, brave adventures that we once dared.

Challenges and struggles, failures and defeat,

Overwhelmed with frustration, leaving us incomplete,

Breakups, illnesses, deaths and pandemic,

Broken hearts, mournful soul, leaving us quite pathetic.

We all come to a point where we need to face our demons,

Try searching within, with hopes to find our freedom,

A can of worms we open, as we try to understand,

The lessons of the past, how much do we withstand.

Victories and successes are not all there is to search,

But the pursuit of happiness, whether you find it in or out of church,

Regardless of your gender, religion, race or affiliations,

We're all one and connected, for we are all God's creations.

Never underestimate the power of your story,

For the lessons it holds, comes from your tedious journey,

Realize that in life, we always have a choice,

Find the strength and the courage to use your own voice.

Simple or profound, let's share our experiences

Stop belittling yourself by gathering your defenses

For hundreds, or one poor soul may benefit from your story

The hard lessons one might avoid could be your greatest glory
